The picturesque canyon which connects the lagoon to the island’s inland has a great archaeological value. It is the only site on Brač where the remains of Greek civilisation have been found (Barbarić 2006). There is also a mystery as to why a Greek colonial settlement hasn’t been founded on Brač unlike other large islands of middle Dalmatia. Traces of an ancient Roman fish farm can be seen during low tide.
